  1. Speaker’s Legislation Protecting Workers Heads to House Floor

(Washington, D.C.)—For decades, states have started to participate in a race to the bottom on workers’ rights. Instead of participating in the race to the bottom, Speaker Sutherland proposed legislation to ensure that all middle-class workers no matter what state they live in are able to provide for their families.

“We need to take a strong stand in Washington that the rights of the worker are paramount,” Sutherland said. “Protecting all workers from unwise and harmful labor policies means we are only protecting the American economy.”

The legislation would take a step out of the race to the bottom and put every state on a level playing field when employees negotiate with their employers.

  2. Speaker Sutherland applauds President’s vision in Inaugural

(Washington, D.C.)—Speaker Andrew Sutherland (D-IL-20) issued the following statement in response to the President’s Inaugural Address:

“The President has laid out a vision that will keep American on the path to success that we saw under the prior administration. Now its time for Congress to heed his vision as the popularly elected President and work together for an America where every American can realize their American Dream.”

Speaker Sutherland looks forward to working with members of both parties to ensure that the government that Americans voted for in electing President Grayson becomes reality

  3. Name: Andrew Sutherland (Speaker D-IL-20)

    Party: Democrat

    Interviewing agency: State Journal-Register

"The American people spoke for a vision of progress and policy that helps every middle-class family. In an attempt to curry bipartisan favor, Democrats accepted the Republican change to committees and a Republican proposal to change precedent on decorum in our Congress and now voting against their own proposals. The Republican caucus once again goes partisan after being walloped at the election for their partisanship last Congress. Democrats will do everything we can to get the House to start working on what the people want instead of being bogged down by the Republicans games."

  4. Sutherland urges Senate to find common ground on banning partial birth abortions

(Washington, D.C.)-- The United States Senate has once again taken up a measure to potentially ban the act of partial birth abortion. Speaker Andrew Sutherland (D-IL-20) urged Senate Republicans to work with Senate Democrats to find some kind of common ground.

"Look the last session in the House we were able to pass a partial-birth abortion ban, but it wasn't unanimous there was opposition," Sutherland said. "I still believe we should ban the horrendous act, but I will not waste the House's time on legislation that has no chance of passing the Senate."

Sutherland sponsored the measure last session and it passed the House despite objections from some members of his own caucus.

"We need to ban partial-birth abortions and if that means we pass some amendments to the legislation to get it out of the Senate then for god's sake Senator Schultz should heed that and compromise," Sutherland said. "Let's get this done. If the Senate can pass a compromise on the partial-birth abortion ban I will work to immediately bring it to the floor of the US House."

  5. Sutherland Celebrates Democratic Wins Across the Country

(Springfield)—As election night neared its end, millions of Americans across the country voted to elect Democrats to return to the White House, take the majority in the House and make huge gains in the Senate.

The House Minority Leader for the end of the 106th Congress celebrated his re-election and many others throughout the country with family and friends in Springfield.

“Tonight, the American people decided that the Democrats plans for real solutions to our very real problems are what our country needs and that they can’t be solved with partisan games,” Sutherland said. “I look forward to working with Republicans and Democrats to ensure that we are able to solve the problems ahead.”

The House Minority Leader will meet with his caucus throughout the next few weeks as planning begins on how the next Congress will be run and who will be running it.

  6. Measure Protecting Farmers Becomes Law

(Washington, D.C.)—In what may be one of the last acts of President William Jefferson Clinton, a measure to protect farmers from unfair trade embargoes was signed into law. The measure would require the executive branch to notify Congress when a selective embargo on an export is created.

“Farmers are not only the backbone of our country, but also feed the world,” Sutherland said. “We must ensure as a Congress that any selective embargo is in the best interest of the country and that our farmers are not unduly harmed.”

The new law also gives Congress the authority to approve or disapprove of a selective embargo and set an expiration date on the embargo.

“I was proud to propose this new law as a solution to ensure farmers are protected in federal decision-making.”

The new law went into effect immediately.

  7. House Dems Pass Fiscal Responsibility Measure

(Washington, D.C.)—Despite the Republicans failure to work with Democrats in the House, legislation looking to expand and extend fiscal responsibility into future Congresses passed the House sponsored by various Democrats, including House Minority Leader Andrew Sutherland (D-IL-20).

“Pay as you go is a common-sense measure that will ensure that when government spending is in deficit, you cannot add more spending without finding an appropriate cost offset,” Sutherland said. “Today, Democrats stood up and advocated for a policy that could pass the House and should pass the Senate.”

The Pay as You Go Act Extension legislation would extend the provisions of the 1985 pay-as-you-go statute from 2002, when it was originally set to expire, to 2005.

“The people of Central Illinois and America want common-sense measures like this to ensure fiscal responsibility,” Sutherland said. “Today, Democrats in the House took the lead and passed legislation ensuring fiscal responsibility and I will welcome further discussions with any member of Congress on how we can continue this great endeavor.”

The legislation now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

  8. Fundraiser #5: Gala

    Location: Philadelphia, PA

Targets: Women, Democrats, Women for Andrews, Moderate Women

    Good Evening!

Tonight, I am honored to join so many people concerned about the future of women in this country. I am especially honored to be joined by so many women who are taking a stand saying that we deserve better. We continue the fight for equality that many women started in 1848 in Siena advocating for the right to vote.

This fight as we all know is a long one and we are nowhere near close to equality for women in this country. Women today only make seventy-three cents to the dollar of men. That is inexcusable and will have to change. We can’t just expect it to be done for us either. We have to stand up and run. That is one reason why I am here today.

I have decided to fight for women throughout Pennsylvania. Fight for women to earn equal pay for equal work. I will fight to make family decisions just that a decision of a woman and her family, not governmental mandates. For far too long, we have been told what we can and can’t do. It used to be voting, then it was what jobs we could have, and now it’s the private decisions of a woman and her family. We have to fight back.

With your help tonight, we will push back against misogyny. We will change the status quo. We will ensure that equality is the goal of the United States Senate. But your help is of utmost importance. You have seen what John Kensley says about women who try to challenge the status quo.

With your help, we will continue the fight that started one-hundred and fifty-two years ago. Let’s win that fight.

Thank you and God Bless the women of Pennsylvania and America!

  9. Fundraiser #4: Mailer

    Mailed Statewide

Targets: Union Members, Democrats, Steel Workers, Coal Miners, Laborers

Front of Mailer: A picture of Rachel Andrews at a steel mill with union workers in hard hats. Quote is imposed on the picture: “Rachel Andrews Fighting for our Jobs”

    Back of Mailer:

    Hello—

My name is Rachel Andrews and I am running to represent middle-class workers throughout Pennsylvania.

This election has been about a lot of different issues, but the one of the utmost importance is ensuring that middle-class workers like you can provide for your families. As an attorney for US Steelworkers, I fought for middle-class families throughout this country.

My opponent wants to implement “zones” that will lower your pay, take away your right to collectively bargain and decrease job stability for you. He says he fights for coal workers but then advocates to give Harrisburg and CEOs more power to lower your pay.

I will always be a vote against “zones” that are intended to attack unions that are fighting for your well-being. I will advocate that we have a federal standard for labor laws so that states won't compete in a race to the bottom and we risk losing good paying Pennsylvanian jobs.

My opponent wants to participate in the race to the bottom. I want to participate in a race to the top. Top tier pay for hardworking blue collar families. Top benefits for those who endure hard labor while people like John Kensley sit in Harrisburg benefitting from your work.

But I need your help. With your support, I can take our fight to the whole state of Pennsylvania and show that this is the campaign for middle-class families. With your support, our message of defending the middle class will reach Washington.

With your help, we will win this fight.

    Sincerely,

    Rachel Andrews

  10. Fundraiser #3: Gala

Targets: Environmentalists, Democrats, Liberal Independents, Lake Erie Area Voters

Good Evening everyone and thank you for joining us in this fight for a stronger Pennsylvania.

I started this campaign a bit ago on the idea that together we can bring together a state that has the best of every world in this country. We have the best cities, the best farmland and some of the best waterways in this entire country. But throughout the state, we are seeing the attempted destruction of our elite waterways.

From Lake Erie to the Delaware River, we need to fight more than ever to protect our unique waterways.

That is why we need your help. As your next Senator, I will give the EPA the powers they need to ensure Lake Erie and the Delaware River stay some of the most scenic waterways in America. I will ensure that attempts to end the Clean Water Act won’t happen. We will fight to protect Pennsylvania and protect all of America’s natural wonders.

Your help tonight keeps us on the path to success in that fight. We can never back down. We must and will continue this fight. We will invest in our waterways and our environment.

Thank you and God Bless Pennsylvania.
