Mr. Chairman,
With all due respect to my colleague from Missouri. He doesn't realize what his own legislation does. He is now turning doctors into criminals. He is trying to shame young women for one of the toughest decisions they have to make in their lives. As a man, I cannot fathom the stress or emotional duress that a 16- or 17-year old female is under. By the way neither does the Senator from Missouri. But as a gay man, I know they stress or emotional duress a child goes through when deciding to tell something to their parents that they feel could destroy their relationship.
What this committee and this body should be doing is reducing the amount of unintended pregnancies in this country. We should be investing in comprehensive sex education. The last thing I will do is be a man in this body telling a woman, no matter her age, what she should do with her body. It is shameful that as Republicans provide a half a loaf policy on healthcare that they turn around a make our medical professionals criminals for doing their job.
This bill isn't addressing the issue. It tries to bring shame on young women all over this country and it turns hundreds and thousands of doctors into criminals. That is why this bill needs tabled.
I yield.

@SenSutherland: Middle class families are trying to make ends meet regarding the cost of healthcare.
@SenSutherland: Instead Republicans are pushing legislation that will only make our healthcare system worse by making it harder to afford doctor visits and critical care.
@SenSutherland: We should be having vigorous debate about healthcare legislation.
@SenSutherland: Republicans did an aria on the importance of committees and now are voting to skip the committee vetting process. Shameful.

@SenSutherland: Interesting that the first thing Senate Republicans try to do regarding education is defund public schools. (1/2)
@SenSutherland: Americans deserve better by finding ways to invest in our public schools and work with Democrats to make them the envy of the world (2/2)

Senator Sutherland Elected Senate Minority Leader
Washington, D.C. – Today, Senator Andrew Sutherland (D-IL) announced that the Senate Democratic Caucus unanimously elected him to serve as Senate Minority Leader for the 112th Congress.
“I have been honored to serve the State of Illinois in the United States Senate for the last eight years. Today, I am honored to be entrusted by Senators from across the country to lead the Senate Democratic Caucus. We will fight for every American no matter their background, skin color, gender or who they love. We will fight for middle class families trying to make ends meet. And we will fight to provide the policies that America voted for when they re-elected President Murphy.”
In this role, Senator Sutherland is the first openly gay leader of any caucus in either chamber of Congress. He was joined by his husband David and their children for the announcement of his new leadership position.

Mr. Chairman,
I object to passage via Unanimous Consent.
This is legislation that is not needed at this time. We need to be investing more into public education and this legislation from my colleagues on the right only disinvests from public education.
I yield.
