  1. Bion was one of the survivors of the Indochina Refugee Crisis. She made landfall in Indonesia by floating ashore clutching debris after an attack by pirates in February of 1979, at age 12. She was routed to a refugee camp where she spent most of the next year before being accepted to the United States under the Orderly Departure Program working with a Michigan Church Group which was arranging foster families.

Bion was not at all sure what to make of Detroit, her new name, and her new foster family. It seemed an improvement over her previous situation, but it was all so strange. So, she opted to keep her mouth shut, her head down, and just try to keep people around her if not happy, at least not unhappy.

It seemed not long at all before her foster father was off to a new job in Washington, D.C, as opposed to Washington state...very confusing. The public school was, on the other hand, not so confusing. She understood a war zone, and the intent of terms like "gook", "slant-eyes", and "Viet Cong". Explanations did not help, only ridiculed, and the situation escalated., pushing her grades downward in the process. Nor was there any help from the teachers; they were simply too few, and too overloaded. So, she learned how to educate the "round-eyes" physically, outside school hours or off school grounds where she could not get in trouble. Once they stopped bothering her, her grades struggled up to her foster parents demanding  standards.

With time, things settled. There were more Vietnamese students, so their own gang ensured they were left alone. It also let her talk to others about her experience, and theirs, and how to cope with what her experiences and the utter blindness of those around them. There came a gradual realization that, like being left alone by the bullies, they would have to reach out and grasp the help they needed.

Her foster parents were quite surprised when, on graduation, she applied to MSU and their nationally accredited social work bachelor program. The explanation of why was somewhat traumatic for everyone involved; Bion had to explain what she had undergone, as well as some of her friends, while her foster parents had to accept that they had missed an almost painful amount in dealing with their other three daughters and the requirements of  Washington politics.

Completing her Bachelor's in 1989, she promptly went to work, doing her best to focus her, and the state's, attention on the growing Vietnamese communities. In 1997, she was able to add a Master's to her resume, allowing her to work her way up to a decent middle class income while expanding her focus onto the Asian communities overall.

However, it was a constant uphill fight. The population of Detroit was increasingly African-American, which as a group had their own prejudices against Asians. Her attempts to reach out and find common ground ran into heavy resistance. Then in 2001 came the election of Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick, the "hip-hop mayor".  They did not get along for various reasons, some of which she never discussed in public. However, his drain on the public finances worried her that it would destroy Detroit; his focus on the riverfront and downtown were certainly doing nothing for the Asian communities on the north side.

After a long consultation with her foster father, she announced her candidacy for the Michigan House of Representatives in 2004. While Kilpatrick opposed her run and supported her opponent, she was well enough known and respected in her relatively small district of about 80,000 to win election easily. From there, she fought vigorously for her community, for the overall community, and to attempt to bring industry back to the Motor City. Only on the last count did she have much success, as the state Legislature had a Republican majority, but she proved willing to negotiate where it was possible, and accepted the demands of some Republicans concerning budgetary concerns. In her second and third terms, it became a bit easier, as the House shifted to Democratic control, although the Senate remained firmly in Republican hands.

Limited to three terms in the Michigan House, Bion made a run for the Michigan Senate in 2010. The larger district and the support of her opponent by Governor Rich Snyder(R), however, , cost her the election by a moderate percentage. This led to a long conversation with her step-father, who was already planning to retire from his US Senate seat at the end of 2014. There was more then a bit of hesitation on both their parts, in part as they were not fully in agreement. However, one thing they did agree on was they did not want to risk a successful run by Snyder.

Bion thus opened the "Jimmy Carter" offensive. She traveled back and forth across Michigan, speaking for any Democratic candidate and any Democratic fundraiser that wanted her. She slept on more then a few couches, but she also accumulated an impressive collection of political I.O.Us.

So, when she announced her candidacy for her adopted father's seat in 2013, the pundits were surprised by the amount of support she had in the state and local Democratic parties. While she still had to work to win election, of course, her opponent, former RNC and Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, lacked a certain amount of support from her own party, which attempted to recruit someone else to run. In the end, Michiganders opted to keep with tradition, to a point, and stick with a member of a known political family. "Bion" Angela Levin thus became one of a very few freshman Senator in the 114th Congress.

    Anna Mae Savannah Fauntroy(I-GA)

    "Call me Savannah."

Anna Mae Savannah Fauntroy was born in the 7000 block of Mercy Boulevard on the morning of July 7, 1957 when Patricia Scarlett Fauntroy, wife of John Ambrose Fauntroy IV, went into labor several weeks early. She delivered in the ambulance on the way to St. Joseph's Hospital. The sixth and last child, and the only daughter, her name came from the Hebrew phrase "He(God) has blessed me".

Being raised in a powerful and well-off Georgia family with five brothers, she learned a view early that nothing was impossible, even if it meant going against the generations-old Blue Dog Democratic beliefs of her family. It did not hurt that she turned out, as she described it, "not small", eventually being the tallest of the lot by several inches.

After graduating private school a year early in 1974, she obtained a Bachelor's Degrees in Economics and Finance and at the University of Virginia, followed by a Masters in Finance at the University of Chicago.

Her time at the University of Virginia included involvement in a US Army program at Fort Meade, Maryland. She had occassional trips to an undisclosed location while in Chicago. She never discussed other then to say it was "confidential".

Finishing her schooling in 1981, she returned to Georgia. Setting up as an independent mutual fund operation with her own money and a bit of Daddy's, she put in many 70 hour weeks. If she was not researching, visiting, or investing, she was out knocking on potential customer's doors. The Fauntroy name was helpful in this regard in early years, as the photo among her prominent clients of President Jimmy Carter and his wife attested to.

The exception was Sunday. Sunday was church, family, and shooting.

As the years went on, her track record proved more useful. Her name started being mentioned in Forbes and Barron's as one of only two fund managers who were beating the Market Indices consistently.

Even so, the worst was expected with the bursting of the Housing Bubble in 2006. To the pleasant surprise of her clients, however, and the ire of the SEC, she had shorted, or 'hedged', her housing related investments. That included the mortgage backed securities, which she had actually shorted, or bet on them going down in value.

"It was a hunch, but an inexpensive one", she later explained.

While this locked in profits for her clients, it brought a substantial fine from the SEC for violating fund regulations. Paying the fine out of pocket instead of the fund, she changed the Southern Fund from a mutual fund to a hedge fund. While she actually did not change how it operated, it allowed her to perform such hedging again if she felt it necessary.

With the changes in business and the ability to hire certain skilled people she had wanted for years, she finally began to accept the various dinner, event, and party invitations she had previously given a pro forma refusal.

She took advantage to write a book which had been requested by a financial publisher. "Shopping Wall Street with Savannah Fauntroy" was not a bestseller, but sold decently for a book on finance.

The free time allowed her to realize just how much Atlanta needed, and that she was in a position where she could give something back. What followed were a careful series of personal investments and contributions to provide assistance ranging from low cost housing and food deserts to health care.

This, in turn, brought unwanted attention. She found herself quasi-drafted for Atlanta City Council, where she spent two terms. During that time, she became convinced the average councilman or bureaucrat could not tell which side of an income and expense statement was up.

Worse, however, were the Federal Bureaucrats. Most were well intended, but many were bound by regulations which made little or no sense here and now. Conversatiins with the Federal Legislators who could change those rules took one of two tacks. Republicans seemed convinced she wanted to spend the money frivolously and that the program should be cut. Democrats seemed convinced she wanted to spend the money frivolously, and that controls should be tightened.

As she has recently begun to step back from the day to day operation of her multi-billion dollar hedge fund, some of her clients have urged her to take a second career. They're unhappy with how the Federal Government is running. They think that, with her experience running one of the largest hedge funds and her independent views and intelligence, she could do better.

She really could not find it in her to disagree.

The LVT is designed to offset the cost of UCC. If we draw the revenue from the states proportionally and mandate all expenditures derived from the LVT be distributed equally among the states, we should be fine.

That 's not equitable per person, which is how I would expect expenses to occur.

The courts have said if an LVT is levied proportionally to each state, it would be constitutional.

UCC would cover all Americans, no premiums. I have been drawing up the language for the collection process with a reporting process.

That is going to be interesting. Especially if a state refuses to pay.

  5. I am mostly okay with this, but I am pretty sure the LVT is unconstitutional.

Also, is the UCC going to be sold directly, or to the imsurance companies as excess coverage? And is the UCC going to be mandatory? If not, how do you collect it, and what happens to people without? (Any hospital accepting federal funds is cirrently required to accept any emergency patient, regardless of ability to pay)

I wasn’t alive when this happened, but the whole 2000 election night where all the major news networks couldn’t decide if Gore or Bush won Florida is always a fun clip to watch. The 2016 election when Trump won Florida and Ohio was also cool, even though I don’t agree with all of the orange man’s politics.

Anyone who lived in Florida should have realized the initial call for Gore was way too early. The Florida Panhandle, which is very conservative, had not even closed their polls yet. A lot of GOP votes were outstanding.

    Idiots.

  10. US, Russia on Heightened Alert Following Attack on USS Cole

MOSCOW(AP) -- Russian authorities have confirmed that the Russian military has gone to a heightened state of alert, when the US Military did so in the wake of the "obvious terrorist attack on the US Destroyer Cole."

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense that the action was "routine", but was hopeful both sides would deescalate their status shortly. It was noted that with both sides on elevated alert states, it was more possible then usual for "incidents" to occur.

  11. Fire on USS Cole out; 5 Dead, 18 Missing

ADEN, YEMEN(AP) -- With British assistance and over the objection of Yemeni authorities who wanted the vessel towed out of port for fear of it exploding, the fire following an explosion on the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole has been put out.

Initial reports are that 5 crewmen are dead, all from the initial explosion. 45 are wounded, 12 seriously, mostly from the explosion but a few from dealing with the fire. 18 of the crew are missing/unknown status as of press time.

Unofficially, naval authorities state they are treating this as a terrorist attack. Yemeni authorities disagree, insisting this was an accident during refueling.
