Biography

Charles "Chuck" Benedict Goodell

Charles "Chuck" Benedict Goodell (born February 18, 1938) is an American politician serving as the Senior United States Senator from New York. A member of the Democratic Party, Goodell has had a distinguished career in both state and federal government, serving in various capacities including the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

Early Life and Education

Goodell was born on February 18, 1938, in Syracuse, New York, to a middle-class family. His mother, Mary, was a school teacher, and his father, Blaine, was the Onondaga County Executive. Growing up in Syracuse, Goodell attended local schools and developed an early interest in politics and public service.

He attended SUNY Oneonta, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration between 1956 and 1960. Goodell then pursued further education at Cornell University, where he earned a double major, obtaining his Master of Science in Applied Economics and Management as well as his Master of Business Administration between 1960 and 1962. Following his graduation from Cornell, Goodell enrolled in the JD/PhD Program in Politics at New York University, where he further honed his expertise in law and political science, graduating in 1964.

Early Career

Goodell's political career began early. In 1955, while still in college, he volunteered as an unpaid intern for NYS Assemblyman Richard Lounsberry in Tioga County. His dedication and hard work earned him a paid position as a Legislative Aide to the Assemblyman the following year.

In 1961, at the age of 23, Goodell achieved an upset victory in the Onondaga County Legislature elections, representing the City of Syracuse in the 8th Legislative District. This made him the youngest County Legislator in the state at the time. He served in this capacity for twelve years before successfully running for the United States House of Representatives in 1973

Congressional Career

Goodell represented New York's 32nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for three terms, from 1973 to 1977. During his tenure in the House, he focused on a wide range of issues including economic development, healthcare, and education, earning a reputation as a pragmatic and effective legislator.

In 1976, Goodell ran for the United States Senate, challenging incumbent Republican Senator James Buckley. In a closely watched race, Goodell emerged victorious, securing his place as one of New York's representatives in the Senate. Since then, he has served as a steadfast advocate for the people of New York, championing liberal causes and working to address the pressing challenges facing the nation.

Personal Life

Goodell married Judith Edwards in 1959, and together they have two children, Charles Jr. and Donald. The family resides in Syracuse, New York, where they are active members of the community. Goodell and his wife are known for their love of animals and are the proud owners of a pet pitbull named Buster.

Goodell is also a devout member of the Hope Presbyterian Church in Syracuse, where he actively participates in community outreach and charitable initiatives.

Legacy

Throughout his career, Goodell has been a tireless advocate for the people of New York, fighting to improve the lives of working families and promote social justice. His dedication to public service and his commitment to progressive values have earned him widespread respect and admiration from colleagues and constituents alike.

As the Senior United States Senator from New York, Goodell continues to be a leading voice for change, working to build a brighter and more equitable future for all Americans.
