FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Senator Valdez Responds to the Occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

Washington, D.C. - Senator Katrina Valdez (D-VA) issued a statement today regarding the ongoing situation at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, where an armed militia, led by Ammon Bundy, has taken control of the facility. Senator Valdez expressed deep concern over the occupation and its implications for public safety, the rule of law, and the respectful use of public lands.

"First and foremost, my thoughts are with the people of Harney County, Oregon, who are facing an unwelcome escalation in their community. The occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge by armed protesters is not only unlawful but also an affront to the principles of democratic dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes. While we recognize the importance of addressing concerns regarding land management and federal oversight, such discussions must occur within the bounds of civility and respect for our nation's laws," said Senator Valdez.

With her extensive background in national security, Senator Valdez also highlighted the dangers posed by the rise in far-right militancy: "The involvement of anti-government militias and far-right organizations in this occupation is particularly troubling. It reflects a growing trend that we must address with immediate action and long-term strategies to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of all Americans."

The Senator commended state and local law enforcement for their measured response and urged the occupiers to stand down and engage in constructive dialogue. "I applaud the restraint shown by law enforcement officials and echo Oregon Governor Kate Brown's call for a peaceful resolution. I also urge those occupying the refuge to cease their unlawful activities and seek a peaceful end to this standoff. Violence and lawlessness have no place in our society."

Senator Valdez also pointed out the federal government's and local communities' shared responsibilities in managing public lands. "While we must hold steadfast to the rule of law, this situation underscores the need for a balanced approach to land management that considers the voices of local communities. My office is committed to working on pragmatic solutions that address the concerns of all stakeholders involved."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Senator Valdez Criticizes Senate Republicans for Blocking Judge Watford's Supreme Court Nomination

Washington, D.C. - Senator Katrina Maria Valdez has voiced her support for Judge Paul J. Watford's nomination to the Supreme Court and criticized Senate Republicans for their refusal to consider his appointment. With a distinguished record on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Senator Valdez sees Judge Watford as eminently qualified for the role of Supreme Court Justice.

"Judge Watford's judicial record is exemplary, reflecting a commitment to fairness and a deep understanding of the law," Senator Valdez stated. "The obstructionist stance taken by Senate Republicans not only disregards his qualifications but also hampers the functioning of our judicial system, a system that is crucial for upholding justice in our nation."

Senator Valdez emphasized the necessity of a full bench on the Supreme Court to ensure the effective administration of justice. She expressed disappointment in the Senate Republicans' decision to block the nomination process, calling it a dereliction of their constitutional responsibilities. "The American people deserve a fully operational Supreme Court. Denying Judge Watford a fair hearing undermines the principles of our democracy and the integrity of our judicial branch," she added.

Senator Valdez urged her colleagues to rise above partisan politics and advocated for a prompt and fair confirmation process. "It's imperative that we evaluate Judge Watford based on his merits and judicial philosophy rather than through political obstructionism. I call on my Senate colleagues to fulfill their duty to the American people by ensuring a thorough and fair review of his nomination."
