Los Angeles, California - January 15, 2015 - On the occasion of his 33rd birthday, Senator Camilo Jabari deSonido today electrified a crowd of supporters at UCLA with the announcement of his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. Against the backdrop of the university's storied campus, Senator deSonido declared his commitment to a campaign grounded in the values of inclusivity, progress, and compassion, unveiling a visionary platform encapsulated by the slogan "For Us."

In a passionate address, Senator deSonido articulated his vision for an America where every citizen is empowered to thrive, regardless of background or circumstance. Central to his platform are key pillars aimed at addressing the pressing issues facing the nation, including the urgent need for a living wage, accessible healthcare, quality education, and robust opportunities for economic advancement.

"At this critical juncture in our nation's history, I stand before you not as a politician seeking power, but as a servant of the people, driven by the singular purpose of building a brighter future," declared Senator deSonido. "Our campaign is about more than just promises; it's about delivering tangible change that uplifts every American. That's why our rallying cry is 'For Us' - because together, we will build an America where opportunity knows no bounds."

Senator deSonido's platform also addresses the complexities of immigration reform, advocating for a balanced approach that strengthens border security while recognizing the humanity of those seeking refuge and opportunity in the United States. He emphasized the need for comprehensive solutions to combat the scourge of drug trafficking and organized crime, pledging to be resolute in confronting cartels and addressing the root causes of violence and instability.

As the first openly gay US senator, the first Black and Latino senator from California, and a trailblazer in the political arena, Senator deSonido's candidacy represents a historic moment in American politics. His unwavering commitment to progressive values, coupled with his track record of effective leadership, has garnered widespread support and enthusiasm from across the nation. If elected, he will become the youngest president in American history, due to be inaugurated 5 days after his 35th birthday.

With the launch of his presidential bid, Senator deSonido embarks on a journey to unite Americans around a shared vision of a more just, equitable, and compassionate society. As he aptly stated, "This campaign is not about me; it's about all of us. Together, we will harness the power of our collective voice to create an America where opportunity, prosperity, and dignity are within reach for every citizen."

Senator Camilo deSonido Launches Presidential Campaign with Inspirational Address at St. James United Methodist Church

Sumter, SC - Today marked a historic moment as Senator Camilo deSonido, the trailblazing politician and dedicated servant of the people, launched his presidential campaign with a stirring speech at St. James United Methodist Church in Sumter, South Carolina. This significant event not only symbolized a homecoming for Senator deSonido but also served as a powerful declaration of his vision for a more just and compassionate America.

Stepping into the familiar halls of St. James, where he spent his formative years and where his grandmother once served as pastor, Senator deSonido delivered a passionate address that resonated with the congregation and reverberated far beyond the church walls. With humility and conviction, he shared personal anecdotes and invoked sacred scriptures, weaving together themes of faith, justice, and unity.

He emphasized the urgent need to address systemic injustices, uplift the marginalized, and heal the divisions that threaten the fabric of our society.

"I am running because it’s way past time that we have someone that will be a unifier," Senator deSonido declared. "The only way we can put America first is by putting Americans first, their lives, their prosperity, their needs."

As the applause subsided and the echoes of Senator deSonido's words lingered in the sanctuary, there was a palpable sense of hope and inspiration among the attendees. With unwavering resolve, they pledged their support to Senator deSonido's campaign, recognizing him as a champion of their values and aspirations.

In the days and weeks ahead, Senator deSonido's campaign will continue to gain momentum as he takes his message of hope and change to communities across the nation. From the hallowed halls of St. James United Methodist Church to the bustling streets of America's cities and towns, Senator deSonido stands ready to lead with integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the common good.

Transcript of the Speech:

Quote

First and foremost, I want to offer my gratitude to God. Thank you, St. James, for welcoming me back to this sacred place. I extend my sincere appreciation to Pastor McQuillen for allowing me this opportunity to stand before you today. And what a blessing it is to have the Reverend Bishop Dorothy Brown-Taylor among us. My grandmother, who pastored this church for most of my life, is the reason I entered the ministry, and her influence continues to guide me.

Congregation stands and applauds deSonido’s grandmother

So, if you haven’t heard, I’m running for president.

Congregation stands and applauds

Thank you. Today, we have reporters and visitors gathered here, eager to hear what I have to say. Well, you've come on the right day because here, in this church, my home church, you'll get the most authentic version of me. I'm back home, I'm comfortable, and I'll tell you now – halfway through this sermon, those duck shoes are coming off, and the suit jacket will follow suit as the spirit moves within me. So buckle up, and let's dive right in.

I want to draw our attention to Micah 6:8: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

Now, some may try to pigeonhole me as a radical, liberal, Democratic socialist. And in a sense, they'd be right. However, I see myself as more than that. I draw inspiration from the teachings of the Reverend Dr. William Barber and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., embodying a tradition that transcends narrow labels. I am, indeed, a strong Conservative Evangelical, seeking to uphold the timeless and sacred tradition of acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with our God. I share the concerns of the good reverends about those who would, claiming to be working on behalf of our God, seek to tarnish such a tradition by talking so much about what God spoke so little and speaking so little about what God spoke so much.

These esteemed leaders understood the essence of Jesus's message and its relevance to our lives as Americans engaged in the political process. Jesus championed economic justice, as evidenced in Luke 4, where he proclaimed good news to the poor and liberty to the oppressed. He preached compassion and hospitality, welcoming immigrants and refugees. He emphasized equality and fairness, urging us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus challenged societal norms, breaking down barriers between people of different backgrounds, and condemning hypocrisy and injustice. And yes, Jesus provided healing without asking for a co-pay.

This tradition, grounded in acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God, forms the bedrock of my campaign. It defines who I am and whose I am. Yet, there are forces in our nation that seek to ignore or exacerbate the injustices plaguing our society. They sow division with their rhetoric, attacking our culture and identities, amplifying our differences rather than celebrating our common humanity.

Did you see the backlash as soon as I announced my candidacy? The negativity was swift and abundant. Colleagues and critics alike questioned my alignment with the Democratic Party, hurling accusations and casting doubts. Camilo deSonido, running on one of the most progressive platforms in our history, he wants a living wage, healthcare for all and tuition free college. He’s working for us.” And what was the response? “I’d prefer my nominee be an actual Democrat.” “It’s not his party.” Why is this the first thing to come to people’s mind? I don’t know. Why are people more focused on what letter is beside my name over what I’m actually bringing to the table? I don’t know. But amidst the noise, let us remember the words of Jesus: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." And in that same spirit, those on the other side that seek to spew hate in their rhetoric and in the way they serve and govern…To those who legislate evil, Isaiah warns: "Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, depriving the poor of their rights and withholding justice from the oppressed."

I'm running because it's long overdue that we have a unifier in the highest office. My heart overflows with love and empathy for my fellow human beings. We cannot claim to put America first without putting Americans first – their lives, their well-being, their dignity. It's unacceptable that in the wealthiest nation on earth, people still go hungry and homeless.

America's greatness will be judged not by the wealth of its billionaires but by how it cares for its most vulnerable citizens. This campaign, this movement, is about serving with justice, showing mercy, and walking humbly with the American people. I invite you, just as Sister Harvin did when I was a child, to join me on this journey.

"Come along, my friends, come along!
Get aboard, and ride this train!
There's nothing to lose on this journey,
But everything to gain!"

Will you join me? Will you join this movement for justice and compassion? Together, we can build a society where everyone has access to healthcare, where every worker earns a fair wage, where immigrants are welcomed with open arms, and where no one is held back by their race, religion, or sexuality. We stand at the threshold of greatness – let us seize this opportunity together.

What is there to gain? Let me tell you, brothers and sisters. What we gain is not just material wealth or fleeting power. No, what we gain is the very essence of our humanity restored. We gain a society where compassion reigns supreme, where justice flows like a mighty river, and where every soul is valued and cherished. We gain a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven right here on earth. So I ask you again, what is there to gain? Everything. Everything that truly matters. Join us, today! Get aboard!

The Senator begins to sing, with the musicians joining, then the congregation:

"Come along, my friends, come along!
Get aboard, and ride this train!
There's nothing to lose on this journey,
But everything to gain!"

God bless you St. James, God Bless Sumter, God Bless South Carolina and God bless America!

Senator goes to hug his husband, mother and grandmother, before shaking the hands of members of the congregation.

Statement from Senator deSonido on Loyalty Pledge

Washington, DC - In response to recent statements, Senator Camilo deSonido, Candidate for President of the United States, issues the following statement regarding recent discussions on loyalty pledges within the Democratic Party:

"As a candidate for President of the United States, I am deeply committed to transparency, integrity, and accountability in all aspects of my candidacy. In response to discussions surrounding loyalty pledges within the Democratic Party, I want to address concerns raised regarding my independent affiliation.

If the establishment's only qualm is with the letter beside my name, and if they cannot find fault in my values, my platform, or my record as a caucus member, then I will gladly sign any loyalty pledge required to pursue the nomination to build that bridge and affirm my commitment to the party. However, it is essential to recognize that my commitment to service will always prioritize the needs of the people above party loyalty.

While I am open to engaging in constructive dialogue and compromise, it is crucial to understand that signing a loyalty pledge will not change my resolve. My dedication remains unwavering in transforming the party into one that prioritizes the needs of America's most vulnerable over the desires of big money donors and lobbyists.

As we navigate the complexities of the political landscape, let us remain focused on our shared goals of advancing justice, equality, and opportunity for all Americans. Together, we can build a brighter future that reflects the values and aspirations of the American people. Furthermore, we must unite against those in the Republican party who seek to strip away rights and enact regressive policies. It is imperative that we stand together to defeat their harmful initiatives and uphold the principles of democracy, social justice, and progress. Thank you."

Statement from Senator deSonido in Response to Criticism on Lack of Women's Platform

I thank Senator Heather James for her attention to women's issues and her commitment to reproductive rights. As a senator, I am deeply dedicated to advancing gender equality and addressing the challenges that women face in our society. I unequivocally support a woman's right to choose. I firmly believe that every individual has the fundamental right to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions without interference from the government or external parties. This includes the right to access safe and legal abortion, as protected by the landmark Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. My commitment to defending reproductive rights is unwavering, and I will tirelessly advocate for policies that protect and uphold these fundamental rights for all Americans.

While my platform may not have explicitly highlighted women's issues, I want to emphasize that my commitment to championing policies that promote gender equality, protect reproductive rights, and address the unique needs of women is unwavering. My record in the Senate reflects consistent support for women's rights, including equal pay, access to healthcare, and protection from discrimination.

Moving forward, I am fully committed to incorporating specific initiatives into my platform that address the concerns raised by Senator James. I will prioritize protecting reproductive rights, closing the gender pay gap, implementing paid family leave policies, and ensuring access to affordable childcare and healthcare for women. I appreciate the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue and welcome Senator James's input as we work together to advance policies that uplift and empower women in our state and across the nation.

Senator Camilo deSonido Wraps Up Powerful South Carolina Tour, Propelling Progressive Vision

Last week, Senator Camilo deSonido concluded a recent tour across South Carolina, igniting passion and hope among communities as he championed bold initiatives to combat poverty, enhance education, and revolutionize healthcare.

In North Charleston, amidst the vibrant energy of the community, Senator deSonido delivered a stirring address on the urgent need to tackle poverty head-on. "Today, we stand at a crossroads of opportunity and obligation, and it's time we elevate the working class by implementing a living wage, ensuring that no American is left behind in the pursuit of prosperity. If elected president, I will work to raise the minimum wage to $20 by 2025. Your labor should be enough to sustain your life and your family. It's time to end the abuse of poverty wages and to demand fair pay for a day's work!"

Continuing to Orangeburg, deSonido shared his plan with students at South Carolina State University for tuition-free public college. "Education is the cornerstone of a thriving society. Every student deserves access to quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background. With tuition-free public colleges, we pave the way for a future where every dream is within reach. You can unleash the power of your gifts and talents with a great education and not just provide for you, but build up your communities. And you can contribute to your communities, your families, build a life...WITHOUT THE BURDEN OF STUDENT LOANS. The time is now. Help me get there SC State, our future depends on you!"

In Spartanburg, Senator deSonido brought his South Carolina tour to a triumphant close, rallying support for Medicare for All. "Healthcare is not a privilege, it is a fundamental human right. No American should ever have to choose between putting food on the table and seeking medical care. Medicare for All is not just a policy, it's a moral imperative. It evens the playing field. It takes the burden of healthcare costs off of businesses and off of you. Our economy cannot survive with an unwell workforce. And what quality of life are we giving Americans if they have to choose between feeding their families or being sick? Healthcare hits everyone, but it hits the working class the hardest. Cancer doesn't discriminate against income, so our healthcare shouldn't. Join me as we make it right for future generations."

deSonido had these comments to make after the successful tour: "My hope is that these ideas continue to resonate with the people. We can have progress but first must come participation. As we get closer to the primaries, I pray that South Carolinians and Americans across the country know that when it's all said and done, I've got their back. Everything I'm doing, I'm doing for us."

Senator Camilo deSonido to Suspend Presidential Campaign

Dear Fellow Americans,

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for the warmth and support you have shown towards myself, Kyle, my family, and our campaign. Our team carefully analyzed the current situation and, after thorough consideration, we acknowledge that while there remains a potential path to the nomination, it is exceedingly slim. In the interest of our democratic process and to allow voters to fully exercise their choice, I have decided to suspend our campaign. This step, I believe, is the most prudent course of action under these circumstances.

I am deeply thankful to every individual who has been a part of this journey — every voter, staff member, volunteer, poll worker, and supporter who contributed their time and energy to our cause. Your participation in this campaign is a testament to the enduring spirit of the great American democratic experiment. Your voices are significant, and I urge you not to lose sight of the impact you can make. Please continue to champion our shared values in your local communities, participate in conventions, and become active delegates. It is in these arenas, beyond the digital realm, that the true essence of democracy is realized and our freedoms are secured.

To the Democratic Party, we are indeed fortunate to have such exceptional candidates. Senator Doug Murphy, with his unwavering dedication and servant leadership, has consistently demonstrated his profound commitment to our nation. Mayor Xiomara de la Cruz has showcased an unparalleled ability to unite diverse groups and achieve tangible results. Both candidates have my full endorsement, and I am committed to supporting whomever emerges as our nominee. I encourage all primary voters to actively participate in this democratic process, to cast their votes with conviction, and to show overwhelming support for our party's nominee come November.

To my dearest Grandma Dorothy, Mom, and Pop, it is my sincere hope that I have made you proud. To Papa Rob and Abuelita, watching over me from heaven, I hope you share in this pride. And to Kyle, my love for you is boundless. Your unwavering support has been my pillar of strength. I am honored to be your husband.

America, my gratitude knows no bounds. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. I remain committed to working tirelessly for the betterment of our nation and its people.

With deepest appreciation and FOR US,

Transcript of Speech

Quote

deSonido walks out the first 45 seconds of "California Love" by 2Pac, Roger, and Dr. Dre, waving to the crowd, blowing a kiss to his husband from the stage, and stepping up to the podium.

My fellow Americans, it is with great pride that I stand before you today, answering the call of our next president, the Democrat from Texas, Mayor Xiomara de la Cruz, to deliver the keynote remarks for this momentous Democratic National Convention. First and foremost, I must pay tribute to God, whose guidance has led me to this stage. Secondly, I want to acknowledge every one of you—the backbone of our nation. We stand here today, not as individuals, but as a united collective driven by a common purpose and shared values. Our unity is our strength, and it is this strength that will carry us forward.

Forces around us have tried at all measures to separate us and turn us against each other. These forces, both external and internal, threaten our unity and the progress we have made. America has a storied history of those who use their power, wealth, and other resources to divide our country so they can take advantage. But today, we stand as one. United as a party. United as a people. United behind Xio and Doug. United with a platform that echoes our shared values, built to uplift the working class, enhance our mutual prosperity, and continue creating a country that works for us all.

But unity isn’t always a mandate for agreement. This party is a big tent. We all have ideas that we may not see eye to eye. As a matter of fact, a couple of weeks ago, another Senator and I brought a constitutional amendment to the table that some of us may have different perspectives on. While we may disagree on whether the people should choose their supreme court justices or whether that should remain a power of the presidency with advice and consent from the Senate, we all know that Katherine McCord must not be allowed to make that choice. While we may disagree, we must still remain on one accord. We should be united as a party, but our loyalty should be to this country and ensuring that our rights and freedoms are secure and that America fulfills her promise to her children to be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

That promise is not fulfilled by division or stealing fair wages from workers. It is not fulfilled by keeping Americans from being able to afford an education. It is not fulfilled when millions are sick and without healthcare. It is not fulfilled when thousands of our brothers and sisters, our veterans, are on the street without a home. These things are not liberty. These things are not justice. And despite some groaning from people who wouldn’t know Jesus if he was trying to come across the border, these things are not of God.

The prophet Isaiah taught, "Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people." Republicans seek to tear away not just our freedoms and rights but also our systems and laws essential to liberty and justice. But we must unite so that “justice will roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream," as MLK once invoked.

United, we can ensure that workers are paid a living wage. We can guarantee that any American who seeks to further their education can do so regardless of their family’s socioeconomic status. We can ensure that women have the right to choose, respect for their autonomy, and equal pay. We can secure our borders and show compassion to immigrants with comprehensive reform to a broken system. United, we can build a nation on equity and love for our fellow Americans.

Xiomara de la Cruz and Doug Murphy are working together to unite our nation based on these principles. However, they cannot do it alone. They need your help, your support, to achieve this goal. We need the support of our young people and seniors, progressives and new democrats, and blue dogs. We also need the backing of our working class and middle class, as well as the LGBTQ+ community and those outside of it. Regardless of your race, whether you are white, Black, Latino, Asian, or of any other race, we need you. We welcome people of any religion or those who do not follow any religion at all. Our goal is to unite everyone. Let's work together today, tomorrow, and most importantly, on November 8th.

In closing, my fellow Americans, let us remember that we are all in this together. We have come too far and fought too hard to let our differences divide us. Today, we stand united, ready to move forward as one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Let us support Mayor Xiomara de la Cruz and Doug Murphy in their quest to lead this great nation. Let us show the world that America is a beacon of hope, a land of opportunity, and a place where all people can thrive. Thank you, God bless the Democratic Party and God bless the United States of America.

Senator Camilo deSonido Introduces Landmark Bill to Legalize and Research Marijuana

Washington, D.C. — Today, Senator Camilo deSonido of California took a monumental step in pursuing criminal justice reform and public health advancement by introducing the “Marijuana Legalization and Research Act of 2017.” This groundbreaking bill seeks to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, shifting the national approach from prohibition to regulation and research.

“For too long, the War on Drugs has disproportionately impacted minority and low-income communities,” said Senator deSonido. “It's time to rectify this injustice and embrace a more sensible approach to marijuana policy.”

The bill proposes several transformative measures, including the removal of marijuana from the Schedule of Controlled Substances, thereby decriminalizing its use at the federal level. It also mandates comprehensive research into the effects of marijuana, focusing on both the potential health benefits and risks associated with its use.

In line with Senator deSonido’s commitment to social justice, the bill introduces the “Community Reinvestment Fund.” This fund is designed to support communities most adversely affected by previous drug laws, providing educational resources, job training, and public health initiatives.

“This is not just about decriminalizing marijuana—it’s about taking a step forward in healing the wounds of our past policies,” Senator deSonido emphasized. “It's about science, safety, and social justice.”

The bill also outlines the regulatory framework for the taxation and sale of marijuana, ensuring a responsible transition to legalization. These regulations are designed to ensure product safety, prevent underage use, and establish a sustainable source of tax revenue.

The Senator hopes for "a swift day on the floor and a swifter passing of the bill."

TRANSCRIPT OF SPEECH

Ladies and gentlemen, today I find myself consumed by a range of emotions—anger, sorrow, and yet, amidst it all, gratitude. My heart, first and foremost, goes out to the families who have suffered unimaginable losses and to those who are grieving the hurt or loss of loved ones due to today's tragic bridge collapse. You are in my every thought and prayer during this deeply difficult time. I am thankful for the swift actions of Sacramento's police, fire, EMS, and every first responder who courageously met the day's challenges. My gratitude extends to CalTrans and Governor Jerry Brown for their prompt response and to President de la Cruz, whose heartfelt concern mirrors the pain we share as we mourn, heal, and vow to rebuild with unwavering strength.

This day has laid heavy on the soul of America. From the streets of Sacramento to the fields of Greenfield, Iowa, and the barracks of Fort Bragg—where we lost six brave servicemen—our nation cried out for leadership. In our own halls of governance, vitriol replaces the voice of reason, as some choose discord over duty.

In these trying times, our mission is clear—we must elevate the living standards of our first responders and all workers by ensuring fair wages and the right to unionize. Our focus must sharpen on lifting the spirits and fortunes of the poor, the working families, and the middle class through robust investment in our infrastructure, creating jobs that not only employ but empower.

California and the western states on their own, as the world’s sixth-largest economy, will feel this day's disruption deeply—but its ripples will unsettle the nation. Yet, beyond economic recovery, we must commit to an environmental and infrastructural readiness that meets the demands of our evolving climate.

Let us set aside hollow sentiments and embrace action, for as the scripture tells us, “faith without works is dead.” While Democrats advocate for meaningful change, others transform these sacred halls into scenes of petty drama, neglecting the urgent work required to dismantle systemic injustices that thwart the dreams of our communities of color.

To my colleagues across the aisle, particularly to Jason Roy and the Republican party, the message is one word: Repent. Turn from the sin of hatred and embrace a path of love and cooperation. Support our duly elected leaders, especially our President so that we can advance the welfare of all Americans. Your actions betray not only personal animosities but a broader disdain for the responsibilities entrusted to you by this great nation and its people.

From this bridge where I stand today, I call for repentance. The Kingdom of God, our nation's collective future, is within our grasp—if only we choose to reach for it together. This nation’s foundation crumbles as we speak; thoughts and prayer are not cutting it; unity and immediate action are our only salvation.

Tomorrow, I return to Washington, determined to catalyze change. I will reach out to Democrats and Republicans to propose an infrastructure bill that not only mends but fortifies our nation's framework. When I was running for president, I put forth an idea of a $1 trillion investment to create 13 million jobs, which is not just a plan for the future but a necessity for the present. We cannot afford to wait. We must act now to prevent further tragedies.

This is the essence of our task—an investment that spans from the Golden Gate to the heart of Middle America, ensuring every bridge and road supports the well-being and continuity of this great nation. We must break the cycle of dysfunction and commit to labor that uplifts every American, not just in word or deed but in the short—and long-term impacts of the deeds.

Today, from this platform, I invite all to join in this vital endeavor. Let us invest, let us rebuild, let us unite. America, the time for action is now. Together, we can overcome any challenge and build a stronger, more prosperous future. California, we have work to do. America, we have work to do. Let's get to work. God bless you.

Senator Camilo deSonido Supports President Doug Murphy’s Nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court

Washington, D.C. – Senator Camilo deSonido (I-CA) today announced his full support for President Doug Murphy’s nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the United States Supreme Court, following the vacancy left by the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Senator deSonido issued the following statement:

Quote

I am proud to stand in support of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to our nation’s highest court. Judge Jackson has demonstrated unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice throughout her distinguished career. Her deep legal expertise and historical perspective as a brilliant legal mind make her an exemplary choice for the Supreme Court.

Judge Jackson’s record is one of fair and balanced jurisprudence. She has shown a profound respect for the Constitution and the rule of law, qualities that are essential for a Supreme Court Justice. Her nomination is not just a win for those who seek justice but for all Americans who believe in a judiciary that interprets the law without bias.

Furthermore, Judge Jackson’s background and diverse experience will bring much-needed representation and perspective to the Supreme Court. Our judicial system must reflect the diverse makeup of the people it serves, and Judge Jackson’s appointment moves us closer to that ideal.

I commend the Democratic Caucus for its swift action in uniting around our newly sworn-in President, Doug Murphy, and his Supreme Court pick. This unity is crucial for the stability and integrity of our nation. I also extend my commendation to the Republican Conference and its new leader, Senator David Stewart of Pennsylvania, along with those Republicans who have quickly come to support Judge Jackson’s nomination. Their bipartisanship is a testament to Judge Jackson’s qualifications and the respect she commands across the aisle.

I urge my colleagues in the Senate to join me in swiftly confirming Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. We must uphold the integrity and function of our judicial system by ensuring that this seat does not remain vacant. Let us confirm Judge Jackson and continue to protect and preserve the fundamental rights of all Americans.

Senator deSonido is committed to supporting nominations that strengthen our institutions and uphold the principles of justice and equality.

This strategic change comes after extensive discussions with labor organizers and grassroots activists, aiming to maximize participation and impact.

Labor Day, a day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers, will now also serve as a platform for advocating for a significant increase in the minimum wage. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Senator Camilo deSonido Champions Economic Justice at the "March for a Living Wage" on Capitol Steps

Washington, D.C. — On a bright Labor Day morning, Senator Camilo deSonido stood before a sea of determined faces on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, leading the resonant "March for a Living Wage." This significant event drew thousands from across the nation, unified in their demand for fair compensation and economic justice. Notably in attendance were Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Barbara Lee, and activist Nina Turner, alongside a diverse group of marchers from various walks of life, emphasizing the widespread support for this critical cause.

In a passionate plea for fairness, Senator deSonido articulated the urgency of establishing a national minimum wage of $15 per hour. This rate is proposed as the minimum standard necessary to ensure that full-time workers can achieve a decent standard of living, lifting themselves and their families out of poverty. The Senator emphasized that this is not just an economic reform, but a moral imperative that addresses the dignity of every American worker.

"Today, we gather not just to demand change, but to declare our commitment to justice and equity in the workforce," Senator deSonido stated. "The fight for a living wage is about more than just numbers on a paycheck; it's about respecting the value of work and ensuring that prosperity is accessible to all." You can read his full remarks below:

Quote

Ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, I don’t want to stand before you long. I want you, the people, to speak truth to power today. I encourage you to come up and tell your story.

Gathered here on this day of resolve and remembrance, I stand before you on the hallowed steps of our nation’s Capitol to champion a cause that is as urgent as it is righteous. We march today not just for a fair wage, but for justice, for dignity, and for the promise of America that every working man and woman should prosper.

In the indelible words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” Today, we hold these words as our beacon. Dr. King, in his fight for civil rights, recognized that economic rights were inseparable from human rights.

We are here because we believe, as Rev. Dr. William Barber II aptly stated, “The cost of inequality is too high a price for humanity to bear.” We stand on the shoulders of these giants, channeling their vision and their relentless pursuit of justice.

Our cause, the call for a living wage, is founded on the principle that if you work full-time, you should not live in poverty in the richest country in the world. It is an affront to what we stand for as a nation when a job at full hours still leaves a worker in want. It is time we set the minimum at $15—an amount that ensures no full-time worker is left struggling to survive.

Why $15? Because it is exactly what the data tells us is needed to correct years of wage stagnation, to make wages functional again. This change will uplift 41 million workers—that’s 30% of our nation's workforce. This is not just a number; these are families, communities, lives that will feel the profound impact of our collective voice.

When legislation hits the floor, it must be unequivocal that the minimum is $15—nothing lower. It reflects a wage that finally allows full-time work to be a means of escaping poverty. This is how we honor our workforce; this is how we repay our debt to the dignity of labor.

Moreover, by ensuring that future increases reflect the growth of the median wage, we will not leave our workers behind as the economy grows. We also address the injustice of poverty wages for tipped workers, bridging gaps in our labor system and affirming the value of every type of work.

This march, my friends, is peaceful yet powerful. As we gather here, I urge every supporter to carry this message to their local capitols. Let the spirit of non-violence be our guiding light, as it was for Dr. King and so many others who paved this path for us.

In Dr. King’s words, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” Let us struggle, not against each other, but against the complacency and injustice that have kept too many workers in the shadows. Let us march, not just today, but every day, until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we will bring forth the change that has been too long in coming. Thank you, and God bless every one of you here today, fighting the good fight.

-END OF TRANSCRIPT-

The event also served as a poignant reminder of the peaceful nature of the movement. Senator deSonido called on all supporters to uphold the principles of non-violence and respectful dialogue as they advocate for change. "Let our actions today reflect our dedication to peace and the constructive pursuit of progress," he urged.

The Senator thanks  Senator Sanders, Representative Lee, and Ms. Turner for joining the march and their support for the initiative. Their attendance and that of thousands of everyday citizens highlighted the national urgency for legislative action to address wage inequity.

The "March for a Living Wage" is a landmark in the ongoing struggle for labor rights. It marks a day filled with powerful speeches, heartfelt stories from workers, and a collective call to action. This event reaffirms the movement’s momentum and sets the stage for forthcoming advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and at state levels across the country.
