Respectfully Senator, I ask because precedent of "progressive" candidates aren't usually associated with blue collar "Reagan Democrats" like the ones Congressman Thomas is appealing seeking to appeal to. Is Congressman Thomas a Michael Dukakis or a Bill Clinton? Rhetoric would seem to indicate the latter but I'm curious if you see Congressman Thomas as a traditional progressive or more of a progressive populist?

PR #6 - Majority Leader Schultz Attacks Opposition to Partial-Birth Abortion Ban

Washington D.C. - Senate Majority Leader Miriam Schultz attacked opposition to the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 1999 following ridiculous claims that the bill promotes an ownership mentality over women. Senator Schultz highlighted polls showing a significant majority in favor of a ban on the heinous practice. Her full statement on the floor can be read below:

The fact that this bill has not received overwhelming bipartisan support is simply astounding to me. We all agree that abortion is something that remains divisive among the American People and decreasing the amount of abortions in the country is something we can all strive for. The facts speak for themselves that 61% of Americans oppose partial-birth abortion according to recent national polling and that number has consistently grown since original Gallup polling in 1996. 

 

I simply cannot stand by as the Senator from Connecticut makes false claims about this legislation in an attempt to paint this common sense proposal as an all-out assault on women. Comparing the banning of a practice that involves that death and intact removal of a fetus that occurs late-term to women being considered property is simply ridiculous. I'm not here to spout talking points like the Senator from Connecticut but I can say with certainty that the majority of Americans do not support his mentality and never will as they see partial-birth abortion for what it truly is, heinous.

Fundraiser #3 - Gala - Target: Israel Supporters and Donors

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Its a true pleasure to be with you all here today.

We are on the cusp of a new century and I believe that as we enter this new century of limitless opportunity, we cannot forget the commitments we have made in the past. The commitment the United States has made to our friend and ally Israel is one that must be nurtured and strengthened as we begin the 21st Century. Our dedication to our ally must remain resolute and steadfast in the face of those within Congress and within this country that attempt to degrade that very commitment.

I have been the strongest defender and advocate of Israel in the U.S. House of Representatives and I have the record to back it. While others may say stand with Israel, I have actually acted on that public confession. I was the proud sponsor of the Jerusalem Embassy Recognition Resolution which received bipartisan support from the House before meeting left-wing opposition in the Senate. We overcame that senseless opposition and got that resolution on the President's desk. President Clinton chose to listen to the radicals within his party and reject the common-sense resolution that sought to solidify the friendship we have cultivated between the United States and Israel.

I can tell you all now, if I am President of the United States, I will seek the movement of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. I will direct my UN Ambassador to propose a comprehensive resolution seeking the international recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel. I will also seek to strengthen military ties between the State of Israel and the United States through development of potential short-range antimissile systems to protect Israel from rocket attacks. 

I am the only candidate in this race truly committed to the State of Israel. We need a President who is willing to take decisive action to support our ally of Israel. The time is now to elect a President who is willing to take that action and I am the only candidate who will do just that. I need your support and donations now more than ever in this campaign to take this message to the Oval Office. I am gonna fight every day to insure that Oregon's economy is protected in Congress from those that target the heart of our very way of life. NAFTA has brought about great change and significant progress for our economy and will continue to so long as I am your senator! We have seen the illogical arguments made by the far-left and the far-right alike that believe that NAFTA was a mistake and that free trade is the wrong course for the country. These individuals seek to ruin the progress we have made with free trade and stubbornly reject globalization. If I am elected, I promise that I will do everything in my power to secure NAFTA and expand additional free trade deals to our Asian and Caribbean allies! I will drag the individuals that reject free trade kicking and screaming if I must but I will not let them hold back Oregon's economic potential and the country's economic potential!

 

Education reform is essential now more than ever and I promise to fight tooth-and-nail for real change to our education system! We need to promote school choice across the country and I will fight for just that! Our education system lacks significant accountability for academic results and has remained unaddressed since Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 during Johnson's "War on Poverty". I will fight to insure that any form of education reform must insure that academic institutions are held accountable for their academic results. I also believe in the power of vocational education and I promise to unite Republicans and Democrats together to bring about a bipartisan bill aimed at promoting vocational education. 

 

Clean energy is the way of the future ladies and gentlemen and I am ready to usher in the new age if elected your next senator! Oregon has hydroelectric, wind, solar, and geothermal capabilities and it's time we truly take advantage of this state's potential! Oregon has only dipped its toes into the economic powerhouse that is clean energy and its time that we take the plunge! I will propose federal legislation that expands clean energy opportunities for small businesses through tax incentives and federal legislation that will create a tax credit for individuals and businesses to install solar panels! Oregon can be a leader in clean energy development and will be a leader if I am elected!

 

I am ready to fight for a new Oregon and a new United States! One that propels this great state and country into the 21st century stronger than ever before! This is gonna be a tough fight, that I don't deny whatsoever! I am ready to fight this fight because it is one that is necessary now more than ever as we are on the cusp of the 21st century!
