Reason: American EnergiX Act of 2022

    • I'm encouraged to see Democrats haven't gone for just another big wish list for their activist base like they did with the reconciliation bill. I think the energy bill they've put forward provides a good base for moving forward with a bipartisan approach that will encourage energy independence and address climate change in reasonable ways.
    • One thing I will say about the bill is it didn't do much in its original form to lower costs for Americans, which needs to be our first priority. But Republicans have been putting forward amendments that will bring costs down, so it's crucial that we're able to compromise and get key amendments through to make this bill workable.
    • On the subject of compromise, after reviewing the Whitmore amendment I think it's a fair deal to get Americans relief at the pump without creating a new tax that will just end up costing families more in the long run. So in the spirit of compromise, I'll be voting for that amendment so we can get a federal gas tax holiday over the finish line.
    • If we continue on this track, I think we can see this bill moving forward and getting to the President's desk. The key thing will be whether Democrats will continue to be reasonable or if we'll see them shift back toward the more aggressive go it alone approach they've ended up taking most of this Congress just when it looked like there was a compromise in sight. Republicans are more than willing to meet them halfway so we can actually get some much needed relief to Americans.

Reason: CPAC and Republican Message to Voters

    • There are always a variety of views shared at the Conservative Political Action Conference, but the thread that brought together everyone at the conference was the message not only that Abigail Sharp and Democrats in Congress are taking us in the wrong direction, but also that Republicans know how to course correct.
    • When you look at inflation, Democrats have had no plan because there's no way to address inflation without angering the radicals in their base and their donor class. Their latest energy bill, while it has some good things in it, doesn't really address lowering costs. Republicans are bringing up amendments to bring costs down for consumers.
    • Democrats have completely failed on community safety. We see it with the crime wave sweeping the nation and of course the surge in illegal immigration. Republicans want more police on the beat, and we've proposed Samantha's Law to make sure criminals who cross our border are deported and aren't employed in this country.
    • On foreign policy, the Sharp administration's failures are racking up. Maybe Democrats are too concerned with convincing Barak Mofaz to get taxpayer dollars flowing to foreign abortion providers again to be bothered with real statesmanship. Republicans know how to lead and get things done to protect America and our vital interests.
    • That underlying message that was woven through CPAC didn't just resonate with the folks attending the conference, it's resonating with voters across the country. So we're coming out of this conference excited to bring a message of prosperity, security, and stability to the American people as an alternative to Democrats' gridlock and upheaval.

Reason: State Gas Tax Holidays and Progress Toward a National Holiday

    • I'm really glad to see legislatures in my home state of Utah, as well as Arizona, Missouri, and New Hampshire introduce state gas tax holidays. I think we'll see other states doing the same. It's important someone leads the way in providing relief for Americans at the pump, and Republican legislators are getting the job done.
    • We're just not seeing anything like this from Democrats at the state or federal level. There's this malaise, you almost get the sense there's an indifference to what's going on out there, like they've totally lost touch with their constituents. The urgency to work together to provide a lifeline to struggling Americans just hasn't been there.
    • You see it in everything they're doing, but especially their approach to this energy crisis. They're so much more concerned with appeasing eco-radicals and socking it to the oil industry that they won't even stop and think about the repercussions for Americans. New taxes will just drive down production and drive up costs.
    • I do think we're going to see progress toward a national gas tax holiday finally. Now that Billie Whitmore is easing Democrats back from their hard line insistence on a windfall profits tax, there's room for compromise. It was hard fought to finally get them to see reason, but it was necessary, because that tax would have been catastrophic for American families and their budgets. Republicans aren't going to let the families of middle America suffer through more preventable inflation on our watch.

Good evening CPAC! It's so great to be here with you tonight to celebrate all the many things that make America great. No matter our differences, all of us here tonight are committed to putting America first and restoring American greatness. This conference is always at the forefront of that fight. And it is a fight, because right now we see our fundamental American way of looking at the world and our role in it threatened by the radical left — and by a party that constantly emboldens the fringe left.

How many times have we heard there was another Sharp rise in inflation? Supply chains that rely too much on foreign suppliers are disrupted. Gas prices are sky high, thanks in part to our reliance on foreign oil, and in part to regulating and taxing our domestic oil industry to death. So what did Abigail Sharp and her party do? They spent another $1.4 trillion and drove inflation up further. They dithered for more than a year hoping we wouldn't notice they have no plan to address inflation. And why? Because they can't tackle inflation and please riled up radicals or the fringe donors who fund their campaigns at the same time. Everything the far left wants will raise costs for you and your families.

Under this administration and Democrats in Congress, we've also seen a Sharp rise in crime, which is being fueled in part by a Sharp surge in illegal immigration. We've seen news reports of people being randomly shot in the streets. School children are taken hostage by violent extremists as rural communities are left behind. Americans in the prime of their lives are being murdered by criminals who have crossed our border illegally and are being employed here illegally. What have Abigail Sharp and Democrats in Congress done? Nothing. Worse than nothing! Docket after docket, bill after bill, they try to demoralize and defund our police. They want to help illegal immigrants escape detention and escape the consequences of their actions. Why? Because far left street radicals care more about criminals than the safety of our families and communities.

Finally, worldwide we've seen a Sharp escalation in international conflicts, and we've taken a Sharp hit to our standing in the world. Every President since the collapse of the Soviet Union has brought Russia to the table to join us in being neutral arbiters for peace in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Not this President. Under this President, fighting reached the point of no return. Now Iran has become a serious powerbroker in the region. Under this President, dangerous conflicts escalate constantly, threatening our allies, our interests, and our global standing. Meanwhile, China capitalizes on every opportunity to undermine our interests anywhere and everywhere it can. Why is this happening? Because there's more money in it for the donor class of the far left for us to be the world's police instead of standing up to China.

We know how to solve these problems. To bring down inflation, we slash regulations to boost domestic supply. We unleash domestic energy — our own coal, oil, and natural gas, nuclear power, and renewables — instead of relying on oil from unstable countries like Azerbaijan.

We put more police on our streets and more border patrol agents at our border to crack down on crime, stop the flow of fentanyl, and prevent criminals and gangs from outside our country from setting up shop here. We stop the catch and release of illegal immigrants, and we stop letting elites give them jobs to avoid paying Americans a fair wage.

We learn to speak softly and carry a big stick again. We project confidence and power to the world, we lead with resolve and strategic realism instead of racing from one aimless conflict to the next. We bring our adversaries back to the table instead of accepting failure as our new reality.

These sound like simple solutions, but we have to fight for them, because Abigail Sharp and Democrats in Congress are taking America in a different direction — left. Hard left. And we know what's around that corner: More inflation, more crime, and more failure abroad. Let's stand together this November and beyond to throw this leftward lurch in reverse, and put America back on the path to greatness. Thank you all so much! God bless you and your families, and God bless America!
