  1. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    WASHINGTON, D.C.

    1998

It is no longer a secret that President Clinton had an affair and lied to both the American people and the American judiciary. In doing so, the President committed perjury, a federal crime that would usually result in harsh penalties for any ordinary American. The Republican Party in Congress feels the best direction forward with this President is a censure. The President, nor any other individual, is above the law.

With a censure, he would become only the second President to ever be censured and the first in the modern era. It is a rightful punishment that should be accepted by both the Democratic Party and the White House. This is a decision that the Republican leadership did not take lightly. The gross acts committed by the President are for his family to deal with. The gross act of lying is something that the American public has to deal with and because Congress is voted in by the American public, it is the responsibility of Congress to handle such a situation with care.

We have been able to work with the President on many issues and would like to continue to have that working relationship moving forward. In order for that relationship to continue; however, the President and his party will have to accept the censure that will be put forward in the U.S. House.

  2. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    WASHINGTON, D.C.

    1998, QUARTER 1

What the United States is currently witnessing is a steadfast attempt to take away the will of the people. Representative Augustine Delacourt of Missouri, and an independent politician, recently put forward the Federal Marriage Amendment. The legislation proposed would give states the opportunity to adopt a new amendment to the United States Constitution that would formally define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The legislation provides for the accurate following of the constitutional provision on amendments.

The Democratic Party made an attempt to table this legislation this week. Unfortunately for them, it failed to resonate with the members of the U.S. Congress who listen to the people. The Federal Marriage Amendment receives support from many voices on both sides of the isle. Last year, President Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, DOMA, into law, upholding states’ right to protect the sacred act of marriage.

Marriage is not just sacred; however; it is also an institutional foundation of various religions and the Constitution of the United States has its own amendment to protect freedom of religion. Over the course of history in our country, activist governments have expanded government oversight and intrusion, including with marriage. Most of this has been with the good intentions of protecting assets and children of spouses or divorcing spouses. This does not mean that any government institution should have the ability to ruin the definition of marriage or change it in any way that violates the many religions that use it.

As of last year, 26 U.S. States protect the definition of marriage between one man and one woman. All of these states do it on a statutory basis.

The members of the Republican Party are dedicated to defending the conventional, religious definition of marriage that society has adopted and proudly displayed and encouraged. The Republican party wants to see a permanent protection of the American family and protect the freedom of the many religions of our country. The Republican Party hears the people of this country and intends to move forward with the Federal Marriage Amendment. The Democratic Party does not listen to the people or stand with the voice of the people on this vital issue to our nation’s identity. Instead, the Democratic Party is trying to force the people to adopt and support something they do not agree with. The people have their own voice and their own choice and what they want is to protect the sanctity of marriage.
